CIEC was created in 1986 by Professor Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda and its initial objective was to document and analyze contemporary cultural production, with emphasis on the Brazilian case. Many researches and exhibitions were carried out within the scope of this guideline, some of them registered in the three collections published at that time (Papeis Avulsos, Documentos e Quase Catálogo). Over the years, our core has shifted the emphasis of its research work to a privileged, at a certain point, in the line of cultural studies and, more recently, to recover the notion of contemporary. Media studies, cultural identity and ethnicity were added to the studies of the city, technology, image and globalization. Our work consists in the implementation of research, training of researchers and establishment of academic cooperation between researchers, students and institutions. In the scope of the CIEC Seminars we receive Brazilian and foreign researchers. We also promote internal discussions of our work. For further informations, click here.
