TECHNOLOGIES OF COMMUNICATION AND AESTHETICS
1. CURRICULAR STRUCTURE:

The Postgraduate Program’s disciplines are divided into three groups:

1.1 Academic Practices: Disciplines of universal education, directed toward student preparation for the exercise of the academic activities of research and teaching. The disciplines are common to the two lines of research, taken in joint classes, some of them being mandatory and others optional. The mandatory disciplines are offered annually and include: those of basic theoretical education (master’s), of research methodology (master’s), and of directed production (doctorate). Seven disciplines are provided in this group:  

Master’s Degree: mandatory for the master’s and common to the two lines of research. 

Doctorate: optional for the doctorate. However, the Theoretical Problems in Communication discipline is mandatory for doctoral students who have not obtained their master’s in communication. 


•  THEORETICAL PROBLEMS IN COMMUNICATION (1st semester)
Study of the basic concepts, themes, and authors that constitute the field of communication. Theories of communication and problems of technique, ethics, politics, and aesthetics.

• COMMUNICATION RESEARCH METHODS (2nd semester)
The theoretical field of communication and the main tendencies in current research. The link among theoretical assumptions, delimitation of objects, and formulation of hypotheses. Research methods and techniques in the Social and Human Sciences and their applications in the field of communication. The course is developed according to the dominant themes in the research projects of enrolled students.

• DIRECTED PRODUCTION (3rd semester)
To stimulate student scientific production. Participation in two national or international events with paper presentations and publication in annals; publication of articles in national and/or international periodicals and/or books. 

Basic Bibliography: to be defined in a joint manner with the research developed by the students.

Doctorate: optional and exclusive
• DIRECTED TEACHING PRACTICE (mandatory only for fellows)
To contribute to teacher education, with a view to the development of competencies related to teaching in higher education. To incentivize the integration between the postgraduate and undergraduate programs. To provide students contact with the different stages of the pedagogical process, from planning until testing, bearing in mind the globality of the experience. The activity will be accompanied and graded by the advisor.

Seminar of an investigative character centered on a specific theme related to research developed by the program.

• NEW PROBLEMS IN COMMUNICATION THEORY
Study of emerging theories in the field of communication studies and new perspectives of investigation about communication phenomena.

1.2 Basic Fields: Disciplines referring to the basic fields of investigation in each line of research. Every semester, each line should offer at least one discipline of this group. They are taken in joint classes of master’s and doctoral students. The new course syllabi provide nine disciplines of this type, four of them in the Aesthetics and Communication line; and five in the Media and Sociocultural Mediations line:

Analysis of the concepts, representations, and narratives of the technological imaginaries in contemporary cultural productions. The production of technological imaginaries in their relation to specific sociocultural environments. Media, technologies, and production of imaginaries.

1.3 Special Topics: Disciplines in which special studies are performed on the themes that aggregate important reflections on the research developed in each of the program’s lines. They are taken in joint classes of master’s and doctoral students. They are all optional. Each semester, at least two of the disciplines that are part of the course syllabi of each line of research should be offered. There are eighteen disciplines referring to special topics, eight in the Aesthetics and Communication Technologies line, ten in the Media and Sociocultural Mediations line:

2. MANDATORY CONTACT HOURS
Master’s degree: 360 hours/24 credits: 6 disciplines of 4 credits, totaling 360 hours.
Doctorate: 720 hours/48 credits: 12 disciplines of 4 credits, totaling 720 hours.

Relevant Observations:
a) Doctoral students can request exemption from only three course disciplines, using disciplines already completed in the master’s;
b) The contact hours of the disciplines will be met by the faculty and students, by combining expository classes and directed studies; 
c) master’s students will complete two semesters of Thesis Research and doctoral students five semesters of Dissertation Research.
