RESEARCH PROJECT:
Communication, Love, Self-Help, and Biopower: Considerations On Relationships in Contemporary Society

Description
The universe of communication is structured around two key words: mediation and relationships, and in our view, we more frequently identify the relations and operations of biopower and self-help by focusing on the resulting discursive production or on the reception of these discourses. This project intends to investigate the question of relationships: its genealogy and its current state by considering that we have passed from radical relationships to social ties and from this to global, unstable, unfaithful, and frenetic connections. We understand affects as configurators of the field of relationships, and among them the most evident seems to us to be love, which is why our case-study will be the different visions and rhetorical uses of love, whose relation to thought, to communication, and to education had already been pointed out by Plato (Symposium) in the concept of transference, which was re-appropriated by psychoanalysis and today is losing ground to pair coaching, pertaining to the new universe of neuroscience and self-help. By appropriating the expression proposed by Alain Badiou, “love really is a unique trust placed in chance,” we intend to present the current tension among the notions of risk management, health, and success in the contemporary proposal of biopower and self-help, and the premises of freedom, adventure, and intensity that participate in the history of love.
